Difference Between Therapy and Tutoring
The key difference between a dyslexia therapist and a reading tutor is their approach to instruction. A dyslexia therapist creates a tailored instructional plan designed to improve reading and writing skills, while a reading tutor generally focuses on reinforcing what the student is already learning in school.
What can I expect?
During the first session, assessments will be conducted to evaluate your child’s decoding (reading), encoding (spelling), phonological awareness, written expression, reading comprehension, and fluency levels. These assessments will inform and guide the instructional approach. If your child is accepted as a private tutoring client, you will receive a detailed report outlining the assessment results and instructional goals. Additionally, progress reports will be provided periodically to track and demonstrate your child’s development.
Each session is approximately 45-60 minutes in length (30 minutes for kindergartners or first graders). A minimum of 3 sessions per week is recommended in order to see signifcant progress.
Is virtual instruction effective?
Kathleen mostly conducts virtual instruction, though she sees some local students in person. Virtual instruction can be highly effective when delivered in an engaging, multisensory manner. To maximize this, students will need to use a touch screen device compatible with the Zoom application, ensuring the lesson is as interactive as possible. See a sample lesson video below.
*Please note that virtual instruction may not be ideal for children with untreated attention issues.
**Kathleen typically accepts only a few private clients in addition to her full-time tutoring and training schedule. If she is unable to assist you, she can provide referrals.
